CHIROPRACTIC
Chiropractic is the art, science and philosophy of life that centres around the body’s own natural inborn ability to heal and regulate itself.
It goes far beyond a simple system of “putting vertebrae back into place”.
Central to this function is the nervous system that controls and coordinates all cells, organs and systems of the body.
Chiropractic is based on identifying and correcting subluxations (spinal misalignments) that interfere with the nerve messages between your brain and your body. Restoring nerve impulses restores optimal health.
Chiropractic is a program of carefully analyzing the patient and their health problems, taking into consideration all available information and then deciding upon the proper corrective steps.
The concept of Chiropractic is based on simple physics. If the foundation of a building is altered, the effect at the top of the building is quite dramatic and may cause it to topple.
Consider the hip bones and the lower spine (your pelvic girdle) as your foundation. If this is level then you have maximum balance and stability of the spinal column.
If the pelvic girdle or any of the bones of your spinal column (vertebra) become displaced from their proper position (a subluxation), pressure is exerted on nerves interfering with the free flow of nerve energy. This means the organs and tissues served by the affected nerves cannot direct and co-ordinate the action necessary for health and become damaged.
Chiropractic seeks to rectify these displacements by gentle scientific adjustments thus restoring the free flow of nerve energy. This means that the nervous system can again direct the normal processes of the
CHIROPRACTOR
A Chiropractor is a doctor. Like all other doctors he or she receives extensive studies in human anatomy, chemistry, neurology etc. Although the hours of study are quite similar between General Practitioners (GP’s) and Doctors of Chiropractic (DC’s, Grad Dip Chiro, M Chiro Sc), the Chiropractor has a greater emphasis on the study of structure and how to find and correct abnormalities in a persons nervous system. Chiropractors also differ from other Doctors by the belief that the human body gets sick due to a loss of proper function, and that health is restored by correcting the interference to normal function.
The controller of function in the human body is the nervous system. Chiropractors work with a person’s body to allow proper function by removing the interference to it. When this is accomplished, the body can actually heal itself.
Chiropractors actually believe that to help someone to be well, you work with the goal in mind to have a person become and stay healthy through purely natural methods. You work to remove the interference to proper body function, not to remove the symptom or the damaged body part. For this reason, Chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery. Chiropractors feel that drugs and surgery are only valuable as a last resort or in emergency conditions. Thus the Chiropractic quote “Chiropractic First, Drugs Second, Surgery Last”.
One last thing, and that is that Chiropractic works. Every time a patient responds, it is proof that health is the normal condition of the body and that disease is abnormal. Since patients who respond to Chiropractic do so only because an interference is removed and not because something was added (drugs) nor taken away (surgery). Thus every Chiropractic patient who gets well is a living example of what can occur without the use of damaging agents (drugs) or the destruction of body balance (surgery). Millions and millions of people suffer daily when Chiropractic could be their cure. Therefore our purpose is to reach as many people as possible.
All Chiropractors study for a minimum of five years full time at University. The course includes extensive study in anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, pathology, radiology, nutrition and adjusting techniques.
In Australia, Chiropractic courses are available at Macquarie University in Sydney, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne and Murdoch University in Perth.
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease” Thomas A. Edison (1847-1931)
